CCIO Weeknotes 1

This marks the end of my first week working for the Greater Manchester ICS as their new CCIO. Creating this role is a powerful statement of intent and demonstrates the value that GM places on clinical engagement and clinical leadership.
I’m hugely proud to take this role and join the incredible team working in and with the medical directorate.

My first week (and I expect my new few weeks!) has been spent learning both about the structure of the second largest ICS in the UK and building exposure to impressive work that can be hard to see when working in secondary care. A a fan of the Bee Network, hearing about the progress being made in supporting adults and (vitally) young people in leading more active lives was inspiring. I hadn’t known about Greater Manchester Moving before this but it’s worth taking a look at something that shows the potential of collaboration in and across an ICS.
Equally impressive is the nationally leading work being delivered in GM to increase vaccine uptake. The successes of these complex programmes will deliver real benefits to our population and should be a source of pride for us.

Finally (and especially as a renal physician), seeing the commitment to improving care of long term conditions in GM (starting with cardiovascular disease and diabetes) was a joy. These programmes have the opportunity to improve care and experience for patients with these chronic diseases and I can’t wait to understand more about how our digital technologies like shared care plan in the Greater Manchester Care Record might contribute.
